Staff at The Observatory School have recently taken part in two fantastic training sessions delivered by Dr Tina Goodson, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Systemic Family Therapist.
The sessions have focused on understanding trauma, emotional regulation and the importance of building positive relationships to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.
Dr Goodson introduced staff to Polyvagal Theory, exploring how the nervous system responds to stress and feelings of safety. Staff also developed their understanding of interoception, recognising how physical sensations can influence emotions and behaviour.
A key message throughout the training was the importance of connection before correction, recognising that pupils need to feel safe, supported and regulated before they are ready to learn.
The sessions have encouraged valuable discussion and reflection, providing staff with practical strategies to support emotional regulation, strengthen relationships and create positive learning environments.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Dr Tina Goodson for two incredibly insightful and engaging sessions. Her knowledge, enthusiasm and practical advice have been invaluable, and we are excited to continue developing our practice across the school.
As Dr Goodson reminded us:
“Connection is how the story changes.”
We look forward to putting this learning into practice and continuing to provide the very best support for our pupils.
