The Dangers of Group Chats: A Message to Parents and Pupils

At The Observatory School, we take online safety seriously and want to remind pupils and parents about the potential dangers of group chats. Recently, we’ve had some reports of pupils being unkind to eachother in group chats outside of school hours, which has raised concerns about the way social media is being used.

While group chats can be a fun and easy way to stay connected with friends, they can also become environments where unkind behaviour, gossip, and even bullying occur. It’s important for pupils to remember that their words online carry the same weight as those spoken in person, and that unkind behaviour can hurt others.

We encourage parents to take an active role in monitoring their child’s use of group chats and other social media platforms. Here are a few pieces of advice for parents:

  1. Check Privacy Settings: Ensure your child’s accounts are set to private, so they can control who sees their posts and messages.

  2. Monitor Chat Activity: Have regular conversations with your child about their online interactions and ask them to show you the chats they are involved in.

  3. Encourage Kindness: Remind your child to think carefully before they post or send messages. Encourage them to speak up if they see something unkind happening in a group chat, or to remove themselves from negative environments.

  4. Lead by Example: Show your child how to be responsible online by modeling respectful behaviour on social media yourself.

By working together, we can help pupils understand the importance of kindness, both online and offline. Let’s ensure that social media remains a positive space for communication and not a place where negativity or unkindness can thrive.

If parents or carers have concerns about group chat activity, we encourage you to reach out to the school for support. Together, we can keep our pupils safe and promote positive digital citizenship.
