There has been a fantastic atmosphere across The Observatory School’s Vyner Campus in recent weeks, with pupils demonstrating creativity, resilience and determination in a wide range of learning opportunities.
A particular highlight has been the success of our Enterprise Project. Earlier this term, the school’s Governors generously provided each class with £20 of start-up funding and challenged pupils to create and run their own businesses. Since then, pupils have embraced the challenge and have been busy researching products, managing budgets, promoting their businesses and developing valuable employability skills.
Several businesses are now thriving and already making profits. The school’s sweet shop has been particularly successful, with pupils working hard to source stock, advertise their products and serve customers. Other groups have been developing exciting ventures involving 3D printing, personalised products and creative merchandise. The project is helping pupils gain real-life experience of money management, teamwork, customer service and entrepreneurship while preparing them for adulthood.
The success has not been limited to Enterprise. Across the campus, pupils have continued to impress with their achievements in lessons and examinations.
In Geography, pupils explored the climate regions of Brazil and produced excellent written work to accompany their research. History classes have been investigating the Industrial Revolution and the development of agriculture, while others examined the life of Emmett Till and the impact his death had on the American Civil Rights Movement.
In PSHE, pupils discussed the risks associated with gang involvement and explored ways to build positive relationships and work effectively as a team. Art lessons showcased some incredible creativity, including a beautiful owl-inspired hand design and detailed artist research projects.
There has also been plenty to celebrate academically. Several pupils have enjoyed examination success, with pupils achieving excellent results in Computing and completing important accreditation modules. Other pupils have successfully passed writing examinations and completed their final assessments of the year.
The Maths department has praised pupils for their hard work when converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, while English lessons have seen pupils creating professional CVs as part of their preparation for future employment.
Physical Education continues to go from strength to strength. Pupils have achieved personal bests in weightlifting, with records being challenged and broken through dedication and perseverance. Staff were also proud to complete a recent 10km race, setting a positive example of determination and healthy living.
Creativity and wellbeing remain at the heart of school life. Pupils have produced impressive work in Science, Space, Evolution and Art Therapy sessions, while acts of kindness continue to be recognised and celebrated across the campus. One pupil was recently praised for showing exceptional kindness to a member of staff who needed support.
The campus has also celebrated excellent attendance, positive behaviour and pupils who consistently demonstrate the school’s values of being Safe, Ready and Respectful.
A huge thank you goes to our Governors for supporting the Enterprise Project and providing pupils with such a valuable opportunity. It has been wonderful to see pupils applying their classroom learning to real-world situations and experiencing the rewards that come from hard work, teamwork and determination.
